Expose your website

At some point in time, "SEO" (aka Search Engine Optimization) was something everyone wanted to do, no matter what the price. Many companies have a lot of money optimizing sites with keywords and other "tactics" to get placement in major search engines. Over the years this has changed - for the better, actually.

The "top dog" in the world search engine is Google. The Yahoo directory is best in the world. Thus, the majority of people try to satisfy these two companies. There are some other notable, such as MSN.

The only thing that has not changed is the huge competition to try to get your foot in the virtual port with these engines and directories. Take a market like ours, for example (Web Design and Graphic Design). By some miracle we managed to get in Regional Yahoo directory, but it was very hard to find anywhere else, because the market was so saturated. Was using keywords (phrases, actually) as "finding web design at affordable prices." Strange to say, we did it in Google # 1 slot (sometimes we are in the top 5) with "high end web design." We also have a Google Adwords campaign that seeks to address some markets (such as the ones we did, "web design for musicians" and "corporate web design").

Now, optimizing ONLY for "Keywords" is becoming increasingly obsolete. For example, Google is not interested in keywords in the tag special code (tags) on your web page. What are you most interested in: content - and good content (content that a human being would want to read, not a search engine robot), frequently updated content, and "trusted" links (inbound links to your site - for example, sites that have swapped links - from sites that follow all the rules of Google).

Just as the keywords entered the game yet? Well, it's always a good idea to put one or two keywords in the title of each Web page (what you see at the top of the browser window). You can also incorporate your keywords in the description tag code on your website. And, of course, you can use a key word here and there in your page's content (if that makes sense and does not compromise the quality of the text).

Yet, only adding these things to your web pages do not automatically mean the search engines will find you. You would still need to submit your site (with Google, you can do it here: http://www.google.com/addurl/). But what we have discovered that it is more important than simply submitting your site to search engines is to get inbound links to your site and, in turn increasing the recognition engine like Google. To get more exposure, try to check out our Google AdWords or Yahoo Sponsored Ads (http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com/rc/srch/intro101.php). Moreover, it can not hurt to submit your site to relevant directories (you can usually do a search on the internet for something like "(the type of activity) directories" and pull up some useful directories).

One way to get inbound links and keep the content fresh and informative is to have what is called a blog (short for web log). You can see here on our blog to get an idea of the kind of things that are sent: http://www.jvmediadesign.com/blog/ ~ ~ V In essence, it attempts to address the market with its contents. Or write about things you think your customers would be interested, or extract the content that you think would be interested in sites like http://www.ezinearticles.com. There is another important step that would need to take with the blog and this is what is called "ping". Without going into a lengthy explanation here, I wrote another article about what a blog is and what to do with what can be read here: And if http://www.jvmediadesign.com/blog/blog.php?id=38 you do end up writing something on your blog, you might as well claim that the article to some of these content sites like ezinearticles.com or http://www.goarticles.com. If you do, make sure you put the website link in your author bio or to the bottom of this article - in this way, anyone who uses the article on their website will also put an automatic link to your site. When we started our blog we were a bit 'skeptical, but kept at it and within a month they had more in Google and Yahoo.

I hope this information is useful and that you now have the knowledge of several viable ways to get more visibility for your site....
