What to do when your dog jumps up on visits

When you have a dog that jumps to visitors, is very inconvenient, both for you as for visitors, is unclear.

The most important reason why your dog does this, among other reasons, that does not respect your space, nor of any person. Another reason may be to seek care and another for reasons of social status. You have to study the dog and the environment to see which is the reason.

Whatever the reason is, it is essential to teach to respect your space. You must always respect it when you open the door when you're eating when you're cleaning the house, when you're watching TV, etc..

Personal space is that, personal, and each person will claim the need and with whom you feel comfortable. I recommend no less than 1m. 1 mt space around your body, the dog should not invade without permission yours by invitation. When we eat this space may increase.

Claim your space is relatively easy, just make it clear to the dog until it can go.

For example, when we will open the door to a guest, you can make it feel at a safe distance from the door, as I say, at least 1 m or more, and you have to keep quiet while you open the door and enters your guest . Once inside, it is normal for dogs who want to smell the new guest. It should be left to do, is to present the dog and also, respect for him. But it is important that only let the dog approaches to sniff when you see that is calm, not excited, because he skipped.

You can do as a team if you're with your partner. Moreover, you can make your partner what makes sense and grabbed the strap (always relaxed), and keep quiet while the guest open the door and enter. When the dog is calm, the person who holds it, let it close to smell. When excited, he corrects (calm but firm), and makes you relax. And back again.

This exercise should be repeated as often as needed. Also, if you have a terrace, balcony or your own site within house, instead of being near the door when someone rang the bell, to condition the dog to return to your site, or remain at the threshold of door to the balcony or terrace (with door open), so relaxed, and let the guest approaches, only when it does so in a calm way, without excitement. Every time you get excited, return to your site, and start again.

Forbidden to scold the dog is angry or frustrated, as we will be breaking the exercise and the dog does not obey us.

Important that no one pet the dog while you are in a state of excitement, because it is rewarding that state of mind.
